My name is Rebecca and I am currently a high school senior, soon
to be a college freshman at Washington University in St. Louis.
I took an interest in art at a young age and began taking private
art lessons at age eight in New York City, where I was born and
lived until age ten. At ten my family moved to a Connecticut suburb,
where we still live. In Connecticut I took art classes outside of
school at a local art school. Eventually I took a few lessons from
a local artist, but unfortunately I was unable to continue this
in high school. I did however, take art all four years of high school
and am now taking an AP Studio Art Class.
To be an artist is to observe, but also to interpret and elaborate.
If art were reality, there would be no reason to create art. Art
is created as a bridge between the artist and the world. To practice
what I preach, my artwork is a combination of observation and imagination.
One of my most effective endeavors was my series of reclining female
nudes. It was effective because I successfully combined the realistic
and the fantastic. I observed the mood of the women and imagined
what colors would correspond to this mood.
At times, the line between the observed world and the imagined
world becomes blurred. How can I assume I see as you do? Observation
is not just vision; it extends to interpretation of events. It is
safe to say I do not see as you do, or as anyone else does. My artwork
is unique not only because of my imagination, but also because of
my observations.
But art is not simply a concept; it is also the execution of a
concept. The moods and emotions a piece evokes depend not only on
the ideias of the artist but the manner in which these ideias are
presented. I aim to create for my best audience, for I expect no
more than that and no less.
