"Vintage Photographs" features the work of Smith, who
died in 1979, after an award-winning career.
Following his graduation from Darthmouth and the Harvard Business
School, where Smith served as the photo editor for each of the school's
yearbooks, he headed to Manhattan in 1925 to work in the insurance
industry. A short time later he became enamored with the culture
of Greenwich Village and capitalized on the growing popularity of
candid photography.
Over the next several decades, Smith captured the evocative images
of life in New York City with the 35mm camera he always carried
with him. With his photographs sold by photo broker Nesmith &
Associates, Smith's work appeared frequently in Fortune, Life and
Look magazines as well as many travel publications.
In 1940, Smith relocated to Maine with his family where he continued
his interests in nature and travel photography.
